The Social Media Trap

Why you are exhausted! Guilt! Not being enough! Oh the self-sabotage we have going on in our minds... Just stop! Shift it for more energy.

SOCIAL MEDIA

2 min read

Yesterday, I was at a meeting with a great group of inspiring business owners, and the topic of social media came up. They started admitting how they felt guilty for not posting regularly. Comments like, “I haven’t posted in weeks,” or “I don’t do enough on social media,” filled the room. It was as if social media had become a mandatory part of being a business owner, like if you’re not constantly posting, you don’t matter.

But here’s the truth: it all depends on the business you’re in. And guess what? Building real-life relationships is far from dead. That was the beauty of this casual networking event, organized by Susanne at Macleod Living. It was a space to connect, chat, and build business relationships, possibly even friendships. This is something social media will never replace.

Be gentle... Social Media guilt is wasting your energy

Please don’t pressure yourself to carry that guilt! Social media isn’t the only way to market your business, and it’s definitely not the most reliable.

Social platforms sold us a dream: free marketing to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

The reality? It’s a hamster wheel.

You post and hustle, but algorithms bury your content unless you pay. Stories disappear in 24 hours, so you’re stuck trying to keep that up. Just like TV, it's there to distract! They do NOT have your best interest at heart. They are a large corporation out to maximize profits.

And now you’re not focusing on the business activities that actually generate revenue.

Imagine that you print 1,000 flyers, but the whomever is in charge handing them out, only hands out to 50, and in the case of Social Media, to people who already know you.

Think back to “the good old days” - before social media - when businesses thrived by building real connections. Those businesses weren’t scrambling to post stories or find the next trending sound. They were talking to people, delivering value, and creating loyalty.

Social media started out as a great tool, but now it’s pulling us down a rabbit hole, like a frog slowly boiling in water. Again, the new algorithms aren’t here to help us. They’re here to distract, control, and prioritize what they want you to see. It’s why more people are stepping away, realizing that the constant noise is draining their energy and creativity.

Choose Your Battles Wisely

The next time you feel that social media guilt creeping in, remember this: you don’t have to be everywhere, doing everything. Real-life connections, thoughtful networking, and consistent marketing efforts—like email or newsletters—can do far more for your business than chasing algorithms.

Focus on what works for you and your business.

Social media is just one tool in your marketing toolbox. It’s not the whole story.
